I love to sculpt with clay but I also enjoy playing around with mixed media, especially with found objects.
Some have said I have a thing for nudes and that is true. I like to counter the stereotypical 'model' body type I grew up being told was beautiful, to my detriment. I prefer a good curvy 'traditionally built' figure and I want young people to see that is just as beautiful. Sometimes I just like to strive for anatomical accuracy, inspired by the likes of Rodin. One can dream!
I also sculpt anything that inspires me or I see as an important social issue. I often like to make statements with my work, but not always. Sometimes I just want something to be aesthetically pleasing and nothing more.

Mould Making
Early in my career I worked as a sculptor making originals for Just Moulds. I also made originals for fridge magnets, including some for Multiple Handicap Association fundraising. I made several casts of people's bodies, particularly for women who wanted a keepsake of their pregnant bellies. I experimented with turning some into a clay sculptures.
Driving Creek Railway Tunnel Mural
For four years, I had a studio at the late Barry Brickell's Driving Creek Railway and Potteries, a famous tourist attraction in Coromandel New Zealand. During my time there I cast several fellow artists' faces and made clay masks from them. Phil cast mine. After I left New Zealand a mural was made near one of the tunnels featuring the masks of many of the staff and artists at DCR. Barry wouldn't allow me to cast his face. What a pity.
