Woodford Folk Festival 2017-18

Jo has attended Woodfordia events since its inception over 2 decades ago. Each year she captures many unique magical moments, as entertainers and visitors alike are free to be whatever they can imagine.

2017 marked the fulfilment of Jo's long-held goal - to have her own stall at the festival, the Woodford Music Box, showcasing paintings, drawings, photos, pottery, jewellery and repurposed instruments inspired by her annual pilgrimage to Woodfordia. Out of thousands of photos Jo chose a selection of her most memorable moments - people, acts, events, structures, decorative features and rituals of Woodfordia.

Patrons were at first confused about the purpose of the music box but it soon became clear that the salvaged instruments yearned to be played and were irresistible to the hundreds of patrons who took a turn, sometimes returning daily to play one. They brimmed with enthusiasm born of what ranged from nostalgia for their own missed instrument, to a long-held dream to try an instrument, to spontaneous curiosity to try something new or to “perform” at Woodford Folk Festival.

It was such an amazing experience, enabling the joy of all those players ranging from professional to amateur to beginner musicians, to adults and children trying instruments for the first time. The stall-gallery-studio installation organically evolved during the festival into a popular place to hang out and play or just watch.

Jo would like to acknowledge the traditional owners of the land on which Woodfordia stands, without whose grace it would not be possible for such inspiration to take place. Likewise Jo would like to thank the people of Woodfordia Inc. for creating a space to enable such creativity to occur and the artists who make and share their magic.
